An annual health check-up is one of the most effective ways to take care of your health and help prevent future medical problems. It allows potential health risks to be detected at an early stage—even before any symptoms appear. Regular health screenings enable you and your healthcare provider to better understand your overall health and plan appropriate preventive care.

However, many people are unaware that proper preparation before a health check-up can significantly affect the accuracy of the test results. Inadequate preparation may lead to inaccurate findings and unnecessary repeat testing.

To ensure the most accurate results, here are the key things you should do—and avoid—before your health check-up.

1. Fast Before Your Blood Test
If your health check-up includes blood tests, fasting is essential.

Fast for 8–12 hours before your appointment. This helps ensure accurate measurements of blood glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, and other important health indicators.
Eating before your blood test may temporarily alter certain values, leading to inaccurate results and potentially requiring a repeat test.
During the fasting period, you may drink plain water as usual. Staying well-hydrated also makes blood collection easier.
Avoid all calorie-containing beverages, including tea, coffee, fruit juice, soft drinks, sweetened beverages, and energy drinks. Do not add sugar or cream to drinks, as these can affect blood sugar and lipid levels.
On the evening before your examination, avoid fatty foods, fried foods, and large meals.

2. Get Enough Sleep
Aim to get 6–8 hours of quality sleep the night before your check-up.

Lack of sleep or staying up late may affect several test results, including blood pressure, blood glucose levels, and heart rate. Being well-rested helps ensure your body is in its normal physiological state, allowing for more reliable results.

3. Avoid Strenuous Exercise
Avoid vigorous exercise for at least 24 hours before your health check-up.

Intense physical activity can temporarily increase muscle-related enzymes in the blood and elevate your heart rate and blood pressure, which may lead to test results that do not accurately reflect your usual health condition.

4. Avoid Alcohol Before Your Appointment
Do not consume alcohol for at least 24 hours before your health check-up. If possible, avoid alcohol for 48 hours for the most accurate results.

Alcohol can influence several laboratory values, including liver function, blood lipid levels, and blood glucose, causing results to appear higher or lower than they actually are.

In addition, alcohol may cause dehydration, disrupt sleep quality, and affect blood pressure measurements.

5. For Women During Menstruation
Women are generally advised not to undergo certain health screening tests during their menstrual period.

If you are menstruating, please inform the medical staff or consider postponing specific examinations, particularly urine tests and gynecological examinations. Menstrual blood may contaminate the sample, resulting in inaccurate findings, such as the presence of red blood cells or other abnormal results that are unrelated to your actual health condition.

Prepare Well for Accurate Results
Proper preparation before your annual health check-up may seem like a small step, but it plays an important role in ensuring accurate test results. Reliable results enable your doctor to assess your health more precisely and provide the most appropriate recommendations for your ongoing healthcare.
